Pembroke Overview – Often called a big dog in a little package, ca 25-30lbs. Medium length shedding double coat. Colors are red, fawn, sable, and tricolor. Easily trained, but not necessarily willing to please, making a so-so competition obedience dog, but often high drive agility and herding dogs. Many tend to be pushy due to their herding background, so an owner must be a strong leader or problems might occur.
Genetic problems are hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy (going down in the rear when older), a few eye problems (typically minor), and von Willebrand’s Disease (minor bleeding disorder). They have no known inherited back problems but their shorter legs do not absorb the shock so their back gets more wear than a normal legged dog.
